A Selective Catalytic Reduction Catalyst is used to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from diesel engines. SCR catalysts work by converting NOx into harmless nitrogen (N2) and water (H2O) using ammonia (NH3) as a reducing agent. When ammonia is injected into the exhaust stream of a diesel engine, it reacts with the NOx on the surface of the SCR catalyst to form N2 and H2O. The reaction is exothermic, meaning that it releases heat. This heat helps to keep the SCR catalyst at the optimal temperature for the reaction to occur.
