A ripper shank adapter is a device used in construction and excavation to attach the ripper shank to the excavator. The adapter enables the ripper shank, a long, pointed instrument used to break up hard ground or rock, to be safely fastened to the machine's arm. There are various kinds of ripper shank adapters, but the majority have a bracket that fastens to the excavator and a pin that holds the ripper shank in position. To keep the shank from falling undone while being used, some adapters also have a locking mechanism.
